You’ll learn:
  • Fabric prep, color mixing, and paint vs. dye choices for different fibers
  • Signature techniques: silk painting (gutta/resist), block printing, stenciling, denim, painting, gradients & tie-dye, embellishment
  • Finishing & fixing: heat/steam setting, wash-fastness, care labels
  • Product design thinking: from one-offs to small batches
  • Pricing, branding, photography, and lightweight e-commerce
Course Outline: Session 1 – Welcome, safety & fabric science Objectives: Understand fibers, choose the right paint/dye, set up safely.
  •  Introductions, goals, safety & care
  •  Mini-lecture: cellulosic vs protein fibers; when to use paint vs dye; fixatives
  • Demo: washing/de-sizing, stretching silk on a frame, testing fastness on swatches
  • Exercise: make a labeled swatch card (cotton, silk, denim, velour) with notes
  • Business bite: niches & customer profiles (fashion, gifts, home, bridal)
  • Assign homework: collect 10 inspiration images & 3 potential product ideas
  Session 2 – Color lab on cotton + composition basics
  • Warm-up color mixing wheels on cotton; opacity vs transparency tests
  • Demo: wet-on-wet vs dry-brush; masking with tape/freezer paper
  • Guided project: art tea-towel or tote swatch panel (simple motifs)
  • Critique & photograph work for progress board
  • Biz: calculating cost of goods (COGS) for a tote (template provided)
  Session 3 – Silk painting I: resist lines & flowing color
  • Demo: stretching silk, applying gutta, flooding color, salt textures
  • Project: narrow silk scarf (simple florals or abstract)
  • Fixing overview (steam/heatfollow product directions)
  • Care tag wording for silk items
  Session 4 – Silk painting II: advanced motifs & finishing
  • Layering, controlled edges, adding linework after set
  • Project: full-size scarf; roll-hem or pre-hemmed blanks
  • Quick photo setup: styling a scarf for e-shop images
  • Biz: pricing silk—anchoring & perceived value
  Session 5 – Block printing on cotton/linen
  • Demo: design to repeat (half-drop grid), carving & inking, test on paper, then fabric
  • Project: set of napkins or a tote with a simple repeat
  • Troubleshooting: bleed, pressure, registration
  • Biz: batchability—how many impressions per hour?
  Session 6 – Stenciling & velour/velvet effects
  • Demo: cutting clean stencils, adhesive spray, pouncing technique
  • Metallics on pile fabrics (light pressure, multiple passes)
  • Project: velour cushion cover with two-color motif
  • Care & finishing; lint roller & press with cloth
  • Biz: product bundling (2 cushions + runner set)
  Session 7 – Denim painting & upcycling
  • Prep: wash, de-lint; optional clear gesso undercoat on heavy areas
  • Paints + textile medium; layering, glazing, edge control
  • Project: back-panel art on a denim jacket or detached panel
  • Sealing & wash testing; label placement
  • Biz: taking commissions (brief form, deposit policy)
  Session 8 – Stretch knits & placement prints
  • Working on jersey/tees: stretch considerations, thin layers
  • Tools: markers/liners, small stencils, heat-set order
  • Project: statement tee or baby onesie series
  • Biz: size variants & SKU planning
  Session 9 – Gradients, dip-dye & tie-techniques
  • Ombré, low-water techniques, simple resist ties
  • Project: table runner or scarf with graded color
  • QA: wash-fast tests & photographing color accuracy
  • Biz: seasonal color drops & limited editions
  Session 10 – Mixed media: foil, embroidery & embellishment
  • Demo: fabric adhesive + foil, bead/embroidered accents, fabric pens for linework
  • Project: elevate a prior piece with one tasteful embellishment
  • Care instructions & warranty language
  • Biz: packaging—tags, care cards, unboxing experience
  Session 11 – Brand, price, and photograph
  • Mini-brand worksheet: name, story, 3 pillars, palette, typography
  • Simple tabletop photography (phone), natural light, 3 must-have shots per product
  • Pricing lab: calculate COGS/wholesale/retail for 2 products; margin targets
  • Set up a basic storefront (IG Shop/Etsy or local market checklist)
  Session 12 – Pop-up showcase & sales plan
  • Final finishing & tagging; group critique with sell-through tips
  • Build a 4-week launch plan: content calendar, collaborations, micro-drops
  • Live mock-booth: layout, signage, checkout flow, upsell pairings
  • Graduate with mini-collection + portfolio shots
